In the series, I talk about the techniques, materials, and durability of carrying a revolver in today's world of affordable and reliable semi-automatics. But another popular issue that I didn't pay attention to is that of a heavy weightless nosedive.

It is not an accident. Although snubbies are the most popular type of rifle today, they are also responsible for the negative perception that many shooters have of revolvers. They are difficult to control and shoot accurately. In terms of security, they carry a heavy weight and almost without exception have a bad look. I prefer to focus on revolvers that have a little more size and weight to them that are fun to shoot and easy to shoot well.

But if there's an exception to the user-unpleasant rule in the heavy duty carry category, it's the Ruger LCR series. When the original version of the .38 Special was released a few years ago, I wasn't very impressed at first. The trigger was certainly a big improvement over the Smith & Wesson J-frame, but the recoil wasn't much better than other heavy duty revolvers. Some people are fine with carrying a gun because they don't shoot a lot at the range, but to me that kind of defeats the purpose of being active. If the rifle part isn't fun because I don't want to shoot more than 50 at a time, then I'll find another weapon to carry - one that I'll enjoy working with.

Fortunately, Ruger followed up the original LCR with a version that is much heavier than the .357 magnum. You'd have to be a glutton for torture to shoot big magnum loads out of this thing, but the extra four pounds of weight over the .357 LCR makes a huge difference when shooting .38 Special Ammo, taking recoil from "barely tolerable" .” for simply “quick-tempered.” The addition of the .22 LR version of the LCR, which I reviewed last year, brings more interest to the line, as you can get a trainer with the same size, shape and feel as its centerfire brothers.

And that brings us to the subject of today's review - the new 9mm LCR. It is built on the same frame as the .357 version, so the upper half is metal with the lower half polymer. Like the .38 Special and .357 versions, the 9mm cylinder holds 5 shots. In fact, on the other hand, the only major difference of the 9mm version is that it uses a moon clip.

You may be wondering if a 9mm revolver is the solution to the problem. With the results available in .38 special and .357 magnum, what's the point of chambering a revolver in 9mm, especially since it needs to be lined up with other programs to work properly?

If you want the simplicity of a revolver, then the .38 or .357 LCR versions probably make sense, but there are compelling reasons to consider the 9mm version.

First, there is the benefit of the monthly program for reloading. Both the ejection of spent cartridges and the loading of new cartridges are faster with the 9mm in moon programs than with revolvers and quick-loaders. The shorter length of the 9mm cartridge reduces the chance of jamming and generally improves reloading performance.

But, as I mentioned earlier, the likelihood of re-engaging the revolver in a real emergency situation is slim, at best. There are, however, some less impressive but still useful advantages of the 9mm revolver. The cost of ammunition is high. Ammo prices change all the time, but I don't remember a time when 9mm range ammo was more expensive than .38 special. Sharing common ammunition with auto-auto rifles is an advantage. Even if you don't foresee any nuclear travel issues, it can be a great convenience to reduce the amount of weight you keep in your personal luggage.

Unlike the quick-loader, the moon clip stays with the cartridge and fits into the cut recess on the face of the cylinder. It can be loaded and fired without the monthly programs, but the spent bullets must be removed by hand from the magazine.

More importantly, the ammo performance is probably the biggest advantage of the 9mm revolver. Neither the .38 special nor the .357 magnum have been known to live up to their potential when fired from short barrels.
