WASHINGTON — The coming year will see the US Air Force's long-awaited new aircraft appear recently as the service embarks on its next stealth mission.

But 2022 will also bring what is expected to be tough choices and retirements, as part of the next budget proposal for the next fiscal year.
Pentagon Debuts Its New Stealth Bomber, The B 21 Raider
The B-21 Raider will be delivered to the public in 2022, although there is no concrete date. In a few months, the Raider will make its maiden flight.
Air Force Commander Gen. Defense conference.
This will be the first public demonstration of a new Air Force bomber in over three decades since Northrop Grumman's B-2 Spirit bomber was demonstrated to the public at Air Force Base 42 in Palmdale, California in November 1988. The first public flight took place in July 1989 the following year.
But Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall suggested on December 9 that the Air Force could continue to play Raider cards to the fullest through 2022.
Air Force To Unveil Its New B 21 Raider Stealth Bomber Friday
"You won't see much," Kendall said during an online advocacy panel. "We don't want to give any of this to our enemies. We admit we did it, let it go public, let Congress know. But we won't tell the public much about what we're doing." "
Five B-21s are in various stages of production at Factory 42, Kendall said at the Air Force Base's Air, Space and Cyber Conference in September.
Todd Harrison, an air and defense expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, expects the Air Force budget - due early next year - to release more details on the B-21 in the 2023 budget request as well. Harrison said December. 10 may contain additional information about the service's procurement plan, as well as instructions on how quickly the aircraft can be produced.
But the 2023 budget request may also involve some tough trade-offs for the Air Force, which looks set to retire aging aircraft to free up resources. The next budget is expected to be tight, leaving little room to modernize the service as quickly as necessary. Kendall and other Air Force leaders have recently stepped up calls to Congress to allow obsolete aircraft, which they say will not be used in the eventual war against an enemy like China, to retire.

And with the lessons learned from successive force planning exercises under the Air Force's own generation, the next budget submission may include more force structure changes than previous budget requests.
"Looking back at [MY] 23, that's where I'm really focused," Brown told Defense News in an interview in November 2020.
The Air Force's efforts to find an air refueling tanker to fill the gap between the KC-46A Pegasus and its next-generation counterparts may also gain momentum next year. In June, the Air Force requested funding for the KC-Y or bridge tanker program.
Three months later, Lockheed Martin introduced the LMXT tanker, a modified version of the Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport that will compete with the KC-46 to produce up to 160 bridge tankers.

An interview given by Defense News Dec. At 4, Brown said the timing of the bridge tanker tender has yet to be determined, but the process has begun.

Lawmakers plan 'middle ground' funding for space-based missile warning Congress has awarded the Air Force an additional $450 million in its 2023 budget for space-based missile warning and tracking. The veil of secrecy surrounding the US Air Force's new long-range bomber, Raider, has been lifted.
B 21 Raider Stealth Bomber, Usa
Defense contractor Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Air Force made the first appearance of a B-21 Raider bomber at an Air Force factory in Palmdale, California, on Friday. More advanced than any existing aircraft, the B-21 is capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional payloads. Northrop Grumman said in a press release that it is not expected to make its maiden flight until next year and will not be deployed for several more years.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thereveal was sending a message to the world that the United States had a "duty to defend the United States and deter aggression".
"America's defense will always be based on the cessation of hostilities. Therefore, we prove once again to any potential enemy: The risks and costs of aggression far outweigh any imaginable benefits," Austin said.
Named after the 1942 Doolittle Raid in Tokyo, the B-21 Raider is the first new American bomber in over 30 years. The aircraft is one of six aircraft in production, according to the Air Force. The Air Force said it hopes to eventually get at least 100 B-21 bombers.

Most features of the B-21's development have been classified. Northrup Grumman said the aircraft is connected to cloud-based communications networks and a "digital ecosystem" allows for updates.
And space-age cladding materials make it harder to detect. “Fifty years of development in low vision technology went into this airplane,” Austin said. "Even the most advanced air defense systems will have trouble detecting the B-21 in the air."
Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota will host the program's first bomb detector and squadron, but the bombers are expected to be deployed to Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and Dyess Air Force Base in Texas.
How much the bombers will actually cost will not be known until production improves, which is troubling government watchdogs. Dan Grazier, a senior defense policy member, said: "It's easy to say that the B-21 is still in the program before it actually takes flight. Because only when one of these programs enters the real testing phase are real problems discovered." From the Government Surveillance Project, he told the Associated Press.
The B 21 Raider: A Marvel Of Digital Development
As of 2016, Mr. John McCain, a former Arizona Republican held prisoner of war in Vietnam, expressed concern about the cost of the B-21. But earlier this year, Northrop Grumman said the cost of developing the bomb was below the Air Force's estimated $25.1 billion, Bloomberg reported.
Introduced today, the B-21 Raider will be a dual-capable attack bomber capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear munitions. The B-21 will be the backbone of the Air Force's future bomber fleet of B-21s and B-52s. (US Air Force photo)
