9 Mm Revolver - I've always been intrigued by the idea of a 9mm revolver. Sure, it sounds weird, but this concept is something that resonates with me on an almost emotional level. So when I got the chance to review the Taurus 905, I jumped at it.
I was expecting a high-end revolver that could be carried for self-defense or kept as a nice piece in a safe for the occasional gun-related function. As the gun proves to be a reliable tool, Paste cuts back a bit and the episode is over.

Warning: they sell out quickly. So if you see it somewhere, you want to grab it while you can.

Read the full review, but below I think this gun is a tool, not a showpiece.
It worked well, and I'd like to keep it handy if I had to defend myself, but it's not what I would consider a pretty revolver. The good news is that it's reasonably priced.
At its most basic, the Taurus 905 is a five-shot chambered for the 9mm cartridge. It has a 2-inch barrel and a short grip for easy concealment. A full-length undercut is used to enclose and protect the ejector rod.
Unlike some lighter revolvers on the market, the 905 steel has a steel frame that fits the cylinder and barrel. While the steel frame adds weight to the overall package, it adds strength while keeping manufacturing costs reasonable.

A very simple look. The front sight is a serrated ramp that is part of the barrel. You can't replace the engine unless there is serious engine work. The back is the notch at the end of the top strap.
Taurus uses a traditional bolt action hammer on this revolver. All shots are double-action except for the hammer-handed opener. Double Pull Heavier (over 12 pounds) than the Lyman trigger gauges While heavier, the pull is close to smooth.
The single-action pull feels great with a clean break and no rubbing or jerking. I average a SA pull of just over five pounds per 10 pulls.
Like the Smith & Wesson revolver, the cylinder rotates counterclockwise. Also, similar to S&W rifles, the cylinder release latch is pushed forward to open the rifle for loading and unloading.

Taurus ships the 905 with rubber grips. Unfortunately, the grips aren't the soft rubber used on the company's Ribber grips. However, they are made of hard rubber that absorbs less recoil. For more information on hold and rollback, go to Touch Completion and Range Time.
Believe it or not, there were quite a few revolvers chambered for rimless cartridges. Some famous shooters like Jerry Miculek prefer to use it because of the extremely fast reloading that can be achieved with the moon clip. Read more below.
There have been quite a few wheel guns chambered in 9×19, though not as many as you might think. At the time of this review, there are only two others on the market that I know of: the competition-style 929 from Smith & Wesson and the Pitbull from Charter Arms. Let's take a look at the Taurus 905 and see how it stacks up.
Since the 9mm cartridge does not have a rim that protrudes from the case wall, it is difficult to remove the firebox without tools. Typically, the 9mm cartridge is loaded into the charging hole in the cylinder and plate in the front corner of the case. However, when the round is fired, the pellet expands and gets stuck in the cylinder.

With a rimmed cartridge, the extractor sprocket grips the underside of the rim and pulls the fuze body from the cylinder when the ejector rod is pushed. With a rimless cartridge like the 9mm, the star chute has nothing to hold on to.
The solution for most 9mm revolvers, including the Taurus 905, is the moon clip. The moon clamp is a thin piece of metal, rounded 9 mm. When loading, all rounds are combined like a speed loader. Similarly, when cases are released, they all appear as a group.
The Taurus 905 comes with several clips. I came with five. The clips are small and lose easily, but I was able to hold all five during testing. Because the clip is cheap, many people add it to their revolver.
This is one area where I feel the Taurus could improve on this gun. Small details can transform this weapon from just a tool into something special.

On the side of the frame there are pins with a slightly different color. Speaking to revolver expert Grant Cunningham, he speculated that the cylinder bolts, triggers, and hammer may have been involved. The badge is made from a different compound to the frame and doesn't seem to pick up mold like the frame does. As a result, the badge got a different color.
He looked for the handle and couldn't find it, so he sewed a nice stitch on the edge. This is best seen at the top of the back strap and under the handlebars.
The lower arrow indicates where the retaining suture is not joined. The top arrow points to the Taurus internal lock incorporated into the revolver.
Both of these issues are cosmetic and do not affect the performance of the revolver in any way. However, they detract from the overall look of the gun. A set of quality aftermarket grips like the ones from Altamont will greatly improve the look of the gun. However, to solve the problem of mold on the pin, you need to do something more complicated.

[Update: Since this review was first published, Taurus has changed the finish options on this gun. The company currently offers matte stainless and matte black finishes. This finish solves the problem of unwanted mold. In addition, the company uses a new holding style that solves the problem of vacancies. Weapons look better now and my previous complaint is resolved.]
To be honest, I don't own a Taurus pistol, so I don't have a variety of holsters to test the gun with. (
For pocket carry, the gun is a little heavier than the Smith & Wesson 642 we're used to. However, it hides well and isn't so heavy that it pulls my pants down. I prefer to carry this gun as a belt holster.
I have owned this revolver several times. In fact, I've had this gun for several months - longer than the Taurus or anything else I've ever owned. While there is no intention of long-term evaluation of the gun, what can I do to finish it.

In my time with the rifle, I've put down several hundred rounds. At the end of the review, I shot 13 types of guns: two inexpensive loads from Remington and Winchester, plus 11 high-quality self-defense from Federal, Hornady, Spear and Liberty ammo.
Recoil is significant in 9mm. That might sound odd for a 9mm semi-automatic pistol shooter, but a revolver is a different animal. In semi-autos, some of the felt recoil is absorbed by the action of the rifle, while revolvers deliver the force directly to the shooter's hand.
A quick comparison of cartridges shows that the 9mm has SAAMI specifications with a maximum average pressure of 35,000 PSI.
. 9mm + P 38 is rated for 500 PSI - close to the .357 Magnum's maximum (40k PSI). So, running +P ammo through this rifle is like running a hot .357 Magnum load. If you think the 9mm will recoil like the .38 Special, keep this in mind.

Unfortunately, I may have lost some ammo from my early travels. However, on my last visit I put five different self defense loads into the chronograph and recorded the results. They are listed below.
Performance was measured approximately 15′ from the muzzle of the pistol with a Competition Electronics ProChrono digital chronograph. All measurements are the average of five frames.
Believe it or not, Liberty Ammunition's fastest reload is the lightest recoil. Other loads seem harder to recoil, but the Speer has the most recoil by a wide margin. I couldn't pinpoint what I felt, but it must have had the sharpest pulse.
Measurement accuracy is a simple and meaningless matter. If I attach the gun to another Ransom, I can give you a measure of the maximum possible accuracy of the gun. However, no one fired a gun from a mechanical rest. As such, potential accuracy is largely meaningless.
