The Navy's iconic Blue Angels flight demonstration team will take to the skies this weekend in North Charleston.
NORTH CHARLESTON - For the first time in four years, Joint Base Charleston is hosting its own air show this weekend.
From April 9 to 10, demonstration teams, including the Navy's Blue Angels, will take to the skies over the base.

The iconic flight group was scheduled to perform in 2020, but the air show was canceled due to the pandemic. Since the show is not held annually, it is the first since 2018 at Joint Base Charleston.
The event is free, but parking tickets must be reserved in advance — a new policy this year due to the region's growth, the foundation said.
"The city has grown, and the base has not," said Lt. Col. Mark Jones, director of the Air Expo.
That was "learned" in 2018, he said, when some cars had to queue for hours at the base's narrow gates. By issuing parking tickets, which are also free, attendance should be spread evenly over the two days of the show and season ticket holders know in advance that they are guaranteed entry and a parking space.

The new system aims to create a "more enjoyable experience for all participants," according to the base on the Air Expo website.
Passes are required per vehicle, not per person, but per car, even if someone has access to the regular parking lot. The parking ticket is valid for one day - Saturday or Sunday - and one pass per vehicle is allowed. Getting to the show via ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft is "strongly discouraged" and there will be no designated areas for ride-sharing drivers to pick up riders.

The base issues 10,000 parking permits per day. About 60 percent of available passes have been claimed so far, Jones said, and the base expects all of them to be reserved, with Saturday's passes selling out first, likely by Thursday. On Saturday and Sunday combined, 60,000 spectators will come to the air show, Jones said.

Military families are invited to the base on April 8. The entire air show will be on display, but the base will not be open to the public. Parking passes won't be needed that day and there will be less traffic, so those families recommend going on a Friday.
The air show doesn't start until around noon, but Jones said aviation enthusiasts will line up when the show opens in the morning to see about 24 planes on the ground. These include historic aircraft, such as a World War II C-47, and new ones, such as a KC-46 refueling plane.
Also on display will be a C-17 conducting military and humanitarian missions around the world from Joint Base Charleston. Posters will hang in the cargo hold of the C-17 detailing some of the previous operations that Joint Base Charleston was a part of, Jones said.

There will also be concessions and a children's area, and the base has cleared an entire hangar for STEM-related displays. Exhibitors include Boeing Co., NASA, the nonprofit Water Mission and Charleston County schools, Jones said. The STEM hangar will be set up all weekend for Air Expo attendees to tour, and some school groups will come to the base on Friday for field trips to see it.

The C-17 will be on display, and the Viper Demo Team is stationed at Shaw Air Force Base near Columbia, which just had its first air show in six years April 2-3.
There will be pyrotechnic "dogfights" between a P-51 fighter and a German FW-190 fighter jet, plus a DH-115 Vampire fighter and a Soviet MiG-17 jet.

With their 2020 performance canceled due to COVID-19, the Blue Angels' performance this weekend will be the group's first appearance at Joint Base Charleston since 2010. Jones said they will perform for an hour each day.
There is no mask mandate, compulsory vaccination or negative COVID-19 test policy for the mostly outdoor event. The hangar doors are left open to increase ventilation in the STEM display area.
There are no seats during the show, so spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs, including camping chairs and blankets.

These aircraft include World War II dog fighters, various stunt planes, the C-17s that call Joint Base Charleston home, and the famous US Navy Blue Angels.
John Surratt from the Low Country, who served in the army for six years, was looking forward to seeing the Blue Angels fly.
"I've never seen the Blue Angels, that was the main reason I wanted to see the Blue Angels," he said. "I've never seen them. I've heard about them, but I've never seen them in person, so today I'm going to be here to see them in person."
All performers on Saturday will also ascend to heaven on Sunday, to a different capacity.
