This compact pistol holds an impressive 10 40 rounds, hides easily in an IWB holster, but retains many of the features of its larger duty brethren. Oh, and the Springfield is a very competitively priced gun.

The XD 40 Sub-League is a mini version of the larger XD 40 shotgun. See my review of the XD 40 service model and the military review of the XD in .40 for information on those guns.

Whether for concealed carry or as a back-up to a grim duty pistol, the Sub-Covenant XD 40 is always ready to serve under all conditions.

This striker-fired pistol has a 3" hammer barrel that contributes to a short overall length. The grip length is also relatively short for better concealment. Without the magazine, my pinky finger dangles from the bottom of the gun. With the extended magazine included, I can get a full hand on the pistol.

While the smaller size may make you feel larger and less accurate due to the shorter sight radius, it greatly increases your ability to carry a concealed handgun. For a law abiding citizen, this often means successfully carrying a gun in a belt holster with a shirt or jacket covering it. The smaller size grip helps to avoid wearing "print" with larger clothing.

Anything Special About This Usp C .40 Cal?

The triggers in the Springfield XD Armory series are light and stiff - a feature that should not be overlooked.

Also, the compact nature of the gun makes it an excellent choice in the role of backup gun for the street cop. I carried my back guns in my boot and in my body armor from my previous law enforcement career. For both cases, the Sub-Covenant XD 40 was just the right size to hide under standard outlet clothing. If you carry a full-size XD in .40, the subcompact pistol is even more useful than running your service pistol in the magazine.

There are tri-dot steel sight marks on this pistol. While I personally like the U-Dot style sights found on the Hellcat, the tri-dot sights serve perfectly. Also, the XD sights are steel - not the plastic toy sights found on guns from some other companies. Visions do not pop out of position or break simply due to rough handling.

In the front there is a full supporting enclosure. The enclosure is large enough for most compact lights and lasers if you choose to add one. Personally, I like to have a weapon light on my CCW pistol and a flashlight.

Another standard feature engineered into the XD design is the ambidextrous magazine release. This is a true ambidextrous design and not a single side release that requires you to disassemble and flip the release to use the other side.

Springfield Armory also offers a second version of the pistol with a stainless steel lip. The stainless slide gives the two-tone shotgun a look that I find quite attractive. However, there is no premium attached to the price tag of $540.

Not many people in the gun world measure up to gun purchases, which the state of California has approved. However, gun owners living in the Golden State are only allowed to purchase new guns that have been approved on the whitelist. As you can imagine, this severely limits what products a Californian can legally purchase.

Small enough to conceal in a holster holster or IWB rig, the XD 40 Sub-Covenant provides an incredible amount of firepower for full-size pistols.
