The primary mission of the 27th Special Operations Wing is to develop and employ specialized aircraft and highly trained air commands to conduct and support special operations missions with unique capabilities including: precision aerial fires, specialized mobility , intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, command and control, information operations and rapid combat support.

The 27th Special Operations Group, located at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., is one of four groups assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing. The group performs global special operations duties as a component member of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command. It performs infiltration/exfiltration, combat support, tiltrotor operations, helicopter air refueling, close air support, unmanned aerial vehicle operations, non-standard aviation and other special missions. It oversees the deployment, employment, training and planning for squadrons operating the AC-130H, AC-130W, PC-12, Do-328, M-28, CV-22, MC-130J, MQ-1, MQ -9. and provides operational support to flight operations.

The 27th SOG has had a long and distinguished history since its establishment as the 27th Bombardment Group (Light) at Barksdale Field, Louisiana, 1 February 1940. Elements of the 27thlea BG were in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded the island in December 1941. and help fight the invading force. The Japanese eventually occupied the country and as a result many members of the 27th BG were taken as prisoners of war and forced to participate in the Bataan Death March in 1942.
Over the past 68 years, the 27th designation has been assigned to many groups and wings in countless locations. The 27th was organized as a fighter wing in August 1947 at Kearney Air Force Base, Nebraska. Later in February 1958, in a move to preserve the legacy of the 27th, Air Force leadership moved the assignment to Cannon AFB, replacing the 312th Wing. Since 1958, the wing has supported the F-100, T/AT-33, F-111 and F-16. The 27th Operations Group was redesignated as the 27th Special Operations Group on 1 October 2007.

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — The 27th Special Operations Wing recently activated the 27th Special Operations Group Detachment 1. The new MC-130J airlift unit fulfills the wing's commitment to deploy a force generation model in support of the strategic direction of Air Force Special Operations Command. .
The AFSOC FORGEN model provides Airmen and their families with the predictability of deployment and training to ensure readiness, continue to develop our force, and maintain stability. FORGEN relies on four operational units in the continental United States to support nearly every AFSOC capability. Each operational squadron goes through a 20-month development and training cycle in four phases: Individual Training, Unit Training, Joint-Collective Training and Commit.

"We got up Det. 1, in an effort to reach AFSOC, we will need," said Lt. Col. Michael Roy, 27th SOG, Det. 1 commander. "We are now fully mission capable with the Force Generation model without delay."
Said Det. 1 operates MC-130J Commando II aircraft. Commando IIs fly a variety of low-level refueling missions for special operations aircraft while supporting the infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces.
"It's very humbling," Roy said. "It's great to be asked to raise a new squadron. We've got people who know what they're doing. We're excited about the future of building our own heritage and culture at 27 SOW."
"For the past two decades, our mission has required Airmen to endure frequent, often last-minute deployments," said Col. Terence Taylor, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Wing. Air Force. "The Force Generation model provides an opportunity to invest equally in Airmen's professional development, be more intentional in training and improve individual resilience."
